Dixon Family Services offers extra resources to the community before receiving their next shipment. The nonprofit Dixon Family Services is touted as a “one-stop-shop of social services.”

DIXON, CA (MPG) - Dixon Family Services at 155 N. Second St., is a community-based, nonprofit organization serving Dixon and the wider rural area since 1984.

Touted as a “one-stop-shop of social services,” the establishment has helped hundreds of citizens each year gain employment, improve their financial stability and foster familial cohesiveness. As with any organization, community support is necessary to guarantee success.

Dixon Family Services holds two events each December to garner aid for families and citizens in need of more support during the holiday season. Giving Tuesday, held Dec. 3, was a call to action to all Dixonites to ensure the safety and health of all children within the organization’s reach. While Dixon Family Services accepts donations all year, donations around this time are significant due to the financial woes that tend to befall many families during the later months. According to Dixon Family Services’ executive director Cookie Powell, the need for resources is always greater around this time of year.

“Donations help us help people with rent and PG&E, which is through the roof this year,” Powell said. “Overall, donations determine what we’re able to give for the program, and if we have more than is needed, we have our pantry in use all year long.”

Dixon Family Services also runs the Holiday Food for Families program, which has applicants “adopt” a family with parents who need help making their children’s Christmas merry. Started in 1995, the program has seen moderate success in its ability to empower families in the area. Powell said that from 60 to 65 families are benefiting from the program this year, with intake for applicants having ended Dec. 5.

Dixon Family Services, 155 N. Second St. has held its annual Holiday Food for Families Program since 1995. The program, aiming to support as many families as possible, will benefit about 60 to 65 families in Dixon in 2024.

“Some years, we have 100,” Powell said. “It’s a strange phenomenon; you just never know.”

The program, exclusive to families within Dixon or the surrounding area (95620) with children 18 and under living in the home, begins distribution of resources on Dec. 16 and 17, marking the organization’s 29th time completing this cycle.

“I’m just so proud to live in Dixon because the generosity is so big,” Powell said. “It is our honor to be able to be a conduit because people want to give and they know there are so many people in a condition of need; they know what they donate to us will be put to good use.”
