New DWIC members Cheryl Hughes and Angela Remides are ladies in red for the Women's Heart Health talk this week.

DIXON, CA (MPG) – Women planning to attend the Dixon Women’s Improvement Club Meeting next Wednesday, February 15, 1 - 3 p.m., are encouraged to wear red and be ready to learn more about their hearts.

February is American Heart Month and the goal is to raise awareness about cardio-vascular disease in females and save women’s lives. Heart disease takes the life of one in three women, more than any other health risk, including cancer.

Discussion will focus on cardiovascular diseases, including aortic disease, coronary heart disease, peripheral arterial disease, and stroke. There will also be information on diet and lifestyle that can improve heart health and lower the risk of death or disability.

While some risk factors cannot be changed, others can be treated or managed with medication. Family history is important in assessing heart disease risk so women are encouraged to seek that out.

The business meeting will follow.

The DWIC was established in 1899. The founders were women from families that had settled in the Dixon area following the Gold Rush of 1849 and were interested in beautifying and improving the town of Dixon. The club is open to anyone who is interested in joining and guests are welcome. From September through May, the club meets the third Wednesday of the month usually from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Fellowship Hall at the Dixon United Methodist Church. To become an active member, dues are $35 annually. Call (707) 301-0795 for more information.
