Bay Area Bikemobile, a San Francisco-based bike safety and repair organization, partnered with Solano Safe Routes to School to do bike repairs and educate on bike upkeep. Services included brake, shifter and tire repair, and helmet-fitting.

DIXON, CA (MPG) - On Jan. 31, Solano Safe Routes to School hosted an event at Dixon High School, 555 College Way, to offer free bike repairs and education. According to Solano Safe Routes to School (SR2S) website, the initiative was launched by the Solano Transportation Authority (STA) in 2008 as a response to increased childhood obesity, air pollution and traffic congestion around schools.

Crystal Peacher, one of the two Solano Safe Routes to School program coordinators on Jan. 31, hopes to encourage students through these events.

“Our goal is to educate and encourage students to get to school by foot power with the goal of alleviating traffic congestion around school sites,” said Peacher. “All our programs are offered to school sites free of charge to the school and the students.”

Solano Safe Routes to School regularly works alongside city planners, traffic engineers, law enforcement, educators and parents to address the issue of bike safety throughout the county. At the Jan. 31 event, Solano Safe Routes to School partnered with Bay Area Bikemobile, a San Francisco-based organization that hosts bike repair clinics at schools, libraries, recreation centers and community events. Bikemobile staff repaired shifters, tires and brakes while educating the students so they can make the same repairs themselves when necessary.
