DIXON, CA (MPG) - Musical theater is returning to the Dixon community stage in June with the premiere of “Alice's Wonderland,” written by Kelly Pidgeon James and Cheryl Sommers.

This original production is not merely another adaptation of Lewis Carroll's timeless classical story, ‘Alice in Wonderland’ but an entirely new chapter with the story's protagonist being the granddaughter of the original Alice.

“The magic of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ has captivated generations and this production is essentially a continuation of that original story,” explained James when asked what the audience should expect. “Cheryl and I were determined to retain what made the story so unforgettable while adding new and exciting characters and plot twists.”

Sommers, the co-writer and producer of “Alice’s Wonderland,” agreed.

“We are raising the bar with this production and really stretching our wings,” Sommers said.

To keep to this standard and ensure a truly unforgettable experience, they said, Dixon Community Theater has assembled “an amazing team of seasoned professionals” who are contributing their expertise to this production.

The professionals include Kyle Jackson, who is arranging the music for the original songs; Brett Hendrickson, who has signed up as musical director; and Jean Henderson who will work on costume designs.

“For me, one of the most exciting features of this production is the use of innovative and mechanical set pieces that will aid in creating the illusion of Alice's various transformations,” Sommers added.

Tony James is constructing these custom pieces, which will offer a level of professional design new to Dixon Community Theater sets.

“We are very proud of this endeavor,” James said. “We feel we have created something truly special for Dixon.”

Dixon Community Theater will hold auditions for singing roles at 6:30 p.m. March 12 at the Veterans Memorial Hall, 1305 N. First St. Auditions for non-singing, adult roles and children’s roles will be at 6:30 p.m. March 13 at Veterans Memorial Hall in Dixon.

For anyone unable to make those audition dates, another audition will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. March 17 at Dixon High School, 555 College Way, room 304.

“Alice’s Wonderland” performances at the Dixon Performing Arts Center will run from June 13 to June 22.
