DIXON, CA (MPG) - Dixon Girls Softball is a program designed to teach girls the game of softball and to impart essential life skills.

As a nonprofit youth sports organization, its focus remains on teaching softball fundamentals and good sportsmanship in a healthy, safe and inspiring environment. According to Dixon Girls Softball President Jennifer Reid, youth sports offer much-needed social and team-based skills.

“They keep them busy and out of trouble,” said Reid. “They learn social skills, how to work as a team and how to work independently. Over time, they learn to have a hobby and cultivate skills. Kids need an outlet besides digital media.”

Reid has been a Dixon Girls Softball board member since 2018. She was initially asked to join because her daughter played on one of the teams. During this time, Reid realized her love of being active in the community and supporting the development of these young women.

The opening ceremony for the girls' softball Spring Season will begin on March 22 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hall Park, located at 450 Hall Park Drive. All four divisions will have the opportunity to play on opening day, including 6 years and under (6U), 8 years and under (8U), 10 years and under (10U) and 12 years and under (12U). According to Reid, 135 girls have signed up for the spring season, with approximately 75% of them being returning players.

“The greatest challenge in our small community is we lose a lot of girls to other sports, so we have to work hard to keep them interested in softball,” said Reid.

However, Dixon Girls Softball experienced significant growth in 2025. The 2024 spring season had 75 girls sign up, compared to the current 135 signups. Moving forward, the organization wants to re-implement a 14-year-and-under (14U) team, and to continue to support their player’s development through activities leading into summer.

“We want to integrate some mid-season fun activities like a Hit-a-thon,” said Reid. “We’re looking forward to the girls wanting to work hard to make the All-Star Teams for the Summer Season.”

The All-Star Teams, available to players 8 and above, is a special opportunity for girls interested in ranked and tournament play. Girls are selected by their coaches and there is one All-Star Team per division. Select teams are another opportunity for those interested in a higher caliber of play who cannot afford to join a traveling team. There is currently only a 10U Select Team but the opportunity will be offered each year.

“We work so hard to provide an even playing field for the girls and we hope that the softball community continues to grow in Dixon,” said Reid. “Our ultimate goal is that our players gain a love for the sport, no matter what level they play. We hope they love it and continue to play throughout the years.”
