Fiber Optic Vandalism Confined to Local Area, Not Part of “Coordinated Attack”

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Sacramento field office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) seeks to clarify a statement made by an internet service provider regarding a service outage reported during the morning hours of today, June 30, 2015.
Despite the impact to customers in a variety of service areas in Northern California, the vandalism which resulted in the reported outages was confined to a single geographic location in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The spokeswoman for the Sacramento office confirmed the damage was deliberate and effected both internet and telephone service.
Dan Sequeira, Chief Technical Officer for Interactive Systems, INC, an internet service provider (ISP) located in Fairfield confirmed the Bay Area outage and noted other outages occurred in Seattle, Houston and elsewhere but likely were not related to the local one. Such outages are not unusual but are quickly identified and resolved by the built-in redundancy of the internet system.
Wave Cable, however, suffered extensive outages including its service in Dixon. Both City Hall and Wave customers through the community were without internet, email, phone, and cable TV for almost the entire day Tuesday – and those were not up an operating as of 8:30 pm.
