This Thursday, June 26, 2014, law enforcement agencies in Solano County will participate in the 2014 Solano County Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics to show their support for the Special Olympics and the athletes who participate in the games.
The Northern California Special Olympics games are being held on and around the UC Davis campus. On Friday June 27 the 2014 opening ceremony will start at 7 pm. The games will start on Saturday June 28 7:30 am and will run until 9:45 pm.
Sunday June 29, 14 the games will start at 7:30 am and end at 3 pm.
The torch run will begin in Benicia at about 8 am and end Davis at about 4:30 pm. Special Olympics athletes will participate each time the torch is passed from one law enforcement agency to another. The athletes may also accompany law enforcement runners on some portions of the run.
Law enforcement agencies participating include: Benicia Police Department, Vallejo Police Department, Solano County Sheriff’s Office, Fairfield Police Department, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (Solano Prison), California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitations (California Medical Facility), Vacaville Police Department, and Dixon Police Department.
Benicia Police Department will run the torch to the Benicia State Park. From Benicia State Park Vallejo Police Department will receive the torch and they will run the torch to the Vallejo Ferry Building on Mare Island Way.
From the Vallejo Ferry Building the torch will be received by the Solano County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol and transported by waterway to the public boat ramp in Suisun.
The Suisun City Police Department will receive the torch and run it to the pedestrian bridge on Union Avenue in Fairfield. Solano County Sheriff’s Office will receive the torch and run it to the fountain in front of the Solano County Government Center where it will be passed to the Fairfield Police Department.
Fairfield Police Department will run the torch through town, down Cement Hill Road and to the intersection of Cement Hill Rd and Peabody Rd. At that location the torch will be passed to California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitations (CDCR) Solano Prison. Solano Prison will run the torch on Peabody Rd to the front gate of their facility where they will pass the torch to CDCR California Medical Facility (CMF) staff.
CMF staff will run the torch to the intersection of Peabody Rd and California Dr. in Vacaville where the torch will be received by the Vacaville Police Department. Vacaville Police Department will run the torch through Vacaville and to the intersection of Orange Dr. and Walnut Rd.
At Walnut Rd the Solano County Sheriff’s will receive the torch and run the torch to the intersection of Batavia Road and West A Street in Dixon. At that location Dixon Police Department will be passed the torch and they will run it to their office in down town Dixon.
Dixon Police Department will then deliver the torch to the 2014 Northern California Special Olympic Games being held on the UC Davis Campus.
The Special Olympics have been held annually since the late 1960’s. Today the Special Olympics are in over 150 countries and there are approximately 3 million Special Olympics athletes. Special Olympics Northern California started in 1995.
