The initiative petition is now circulating to repeal the gas tax hike which took effect on November 1, and require all gas and vehicle s revenue spent on road repairs and expansion.

Backers of the measure must collect the signatures of 585,407 registered voters to qualify it for the ballot. They have 180 days to circulate petitions for the measure, meaning the signatures must be submitted to county elections officials no later than May 21, 2018.

Gasoline taxes in California increased by 12 cents per gallon on November 1 with another variable excise tax will set at 17 cents. The excise tax on diesel fuel jumped 20 cents per gallon to 36 cents per gallon. The sales tax on diesel went up 4 percentage points to 9.75%.
The hike also included a new annual vehicle fee ranging from $25 for cars valued at under $5,000 to $175 for cars worth $60,000 or higher, beginning this coming January 1, 2018. Electric car owners will pay a a news $100 annual fee starting in 2020.
The new taxes are estimated to cost consumers a total of over $52 billion dollars over ten years.
